While the divorce was coming to a crescendo, and the pandemic and restrictions were all over the place, my dear sweet roomie Loretta flew away back home to Manchester in pursuit of true love. Before she left, she and I took the Rogue to Malibu for a fun day trip. We had a tearful last meal with my parents who had basically adopted her. I then drove her and her five (!!) suitcases to LA for a last hurrah at the Hotel Angeleno and then to LAX for her flight back to England.
Bye Loretta!
This left the Rogue and I on our own. We explored Santa Barbara and the surrounding areas.
California Road Trip
One of the fantasies we had during all of the Lockdown FaceTimes was a California road trip. I wanted to see my brother and family in the Bay Area (hadn’t seen them in over a year) and show the Rogue other hot spots in my beloved Cali. Despite all of the travel rules, we jumped in the car (a 2012 VW I got in the divorce) and hit the road. More wanderlust and escapism, my staples during this time period.
Madonna Inn
First stop, the over the top Madonna Inn, in San Luis Obispo. Got to see my niece Amanda at Cal Poly SLO and treated her to the delicious steakhouse dinner with the famous pink cake. (First night indoor dining!!)
San Francisco
Next stop, San Francisco! While we enjoyed a few of the exterior sights, restrictions were in full force. Unfortunately, homeless folks had completely taken over the streets, and there were very few signs of life.
Alcatraz
Met up with my brother and fam, so delighted to see them, even masked up and only outside. One attraction that was open was Alcatraz prison, so we all went on the boat and toured the exterior areas.
Monterey
Next stop, Monterey. Missed getting to visit places like the famous aquarium, or indoor dining, but still so freeing to be outside exploring, and showing the Rogue my beloved California.
Big Sur
I’ve always wanted to drive down the One through Big Sur… let’s go!
Last stop, Morro Bay, looking out at the big rock. Endless blue skies in November.
Arrived back in Santa Barbara just in time for Thanksgiving. So grateful to get to share this feast, outdoors, “six feet apart” with my parents.
So much to be thankful for during these challenging times. Gratitude in abundance.
