Mexico – The Cabo Affair Part 3 March 2021

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Mexico

Continued from https://secondchapternomad.blog/2023/07/02/mexico-the-cabo-affair-part-2/ Living in Mexico for three months post divorce, mid-pandemic. Finding my footing, one chilaquile and margarita at a time.

Spring Break Trip with Daughter & Friends

In the midst of my Mexico life, I had a week with Daughter and Twins (her roomies/besties) back at Hard Rock Cabo for a year delayed USC graduation celebration trip. All three girls were working remote, but still managed to have fun and bond.

Rogue stayed at the pad up to mischief with a pal from back home in Scotland. A few debacles including being thrown on the front of a taxi by the policia shaking him down for bribes.

Meanwhile the girls and I went to the spa, the pool of course, and exquisite meals. Such wonderful bonding time and delayed celebration of 2020 graduation!

Bulls and Cartels

March 28 – Sunday – Cabo San Lucas – The culmination of this wild week…I went to (anonymous for safety) disco to negotiate with the security to retrieve Twin’s purse and Rogue’s confiscated phone from same night, but separate incidents. “Little Roberto” the waiter spokesman played the innocent victim. Claimed he paid $500 cash to “security” to hold items; yeah right. One thug after another would follow up with me in Spanish. Finally got it to $365, still what a scam. Got the twin’s purse and Rogue’s phone and I was on my way. (Alas no photos).

I hadn’t forgotten one of our Uber drivers with severed fingers from crossing cartel members. No joke here.

As previously mentioned, besides the cartel members, the actual bulls that strut past our apartment and sometimes block the entrance are incredibly intimidating. We’ve been known to hide behind cars for protection to wait for them to move on down the street.

A DAY IN THE LIFE IN MEXICO

March 29, 2021, San Jose de los Cabos. Mission today: To mail a package.

The twins gave me a glorious bottle of tequila as a thank you gift (which turned into “Baby”, or an adult version of Flat Stanley), and I decided to ship it (empty) back to the States. Then realized might as well send a whole box because I’ve accumulated way too much for my two suitcases as a traveling nomad.

At breakfast, Waiter with the Prison Tattoos volunteered to loan me his car for the mission. Or leave everything for him to mail. No gracias.

Ubered to Attempt #1, dodging police and “inspectors” as always in the Uber-Taxi wars. They say not allowed to ship personal clothing items. Okay…. Back in Uber. Door handle pops off.

Attempt #2. DHL. All systems down. Also I need my passport to ship. Back to apartment to retrieve passport (dodging police and inspectors).

Attempt #3 much farther away with marines guarding the complex.

The super kind worker spent about 45 minutes carefully packing my items to ship – while about six men waited in line. I start sweating with anxiety and apologizing in Spanish. But mission accomplished!

Final Uber driver to return home was the oldest fellow I’ve ever had drive me. He sang, shouted “Mother F***er” at the inspectors, offered me a massage – and gave me a marriage proposal. No gracias!

Wrapping Up Three Months in Mexico

More miscellaneous photos from the neighborhood. Loved my Mexico life, speaking Spanish for three months, enjoying the food, the culture and the people. The glorious beaches.

What’s next?

Once again, Rogue and I discussed carrying on or not. Decided to spend two weeks in Costa Rica before returning to America for a three month road trip across America. Hey, I have no home, but I have a car! And the pandemic is still on.

(Stay tuned for the Costa Rica post and then Road Trip Across America!!)
