Layover in Lithuania

2022 Finland, Sweden, Estonia and now a few hours in Vilnius, Lithuania in route to Zakynthos, Greece! A summer holiday with my daughter from L.A. while I’ve been in London for awhile. Post divorce, mid-empty nest, I’m enjoying every minute exploring the world with my girl.

July 26, 2022 – From the journals

Truly enjoyed half a day in Vilnius, Lithuania! Glorious blue skies. Ukrainian flags everywhere. On the border with pro Russia Belarus, Lithuanians are taking a bold stand for Ukraine. They got their independence from the Soviet Union only in 1990. Rough history with Jewish ghetto decimated in WW II, and later Lithuanians persecuted by the KGB and Gestapo. Now there is peace but they take their freedom seriously. Contrast of this history with lovely restaurants, parks, flowers, and even a pop up Chanel stand.

Did my cold beetroot soup taste test video.  “Here we have cold beetroot soup, a Lithuanian dish, and fried potato pancakes with salmon… and horror or horrors mounds of cheesy dill sandwiched between!”

A conundrum: I love a dill pickle, but I do not like dill and I dislike pickled things especially fish i.e. herring. This has been a Baltic Sea thing from Sweden all the way to Lithuania

Well that’s one for the books!

Sooooo a Lithuanian flight… We sat on runway for thirty minutes with no explanation. People standing, snacking, children jumping over seats. Then we start to move. No comment from crew. Finally a “please take your seats” as we’re taking off. Then throughout flight this pattern continues. Like a day in the park.  Visiting neighbors. More jumping children. A child crawled under my seat. Screaming kids. Adults snacking in the aisles. Never seen anything like it.

By accident booked an adults only resort. #grateful

p.s. now circling the island (the passengers might regret some of those excess snacks). If you’ve ever been on the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland … circling “Neverland”? Yeah like that… we’re never going to land!

When we did land there was a massive round of applause and cheers. Crazy flight!

AND after the fact Polarsteps showed we flew over Ukraine!
