JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI
Day 5 New Orleans – Jackson, Mississippi. Road trip across America continues. In the true South now.
Friday May 28, 2021 Breakfast next door, and checked out of amazing Airbnb (Sextant) in New Orleans. One of the best places we’ve stayed on this nomad journey.
Drove to Jackson, Mississippi
3 hours by car. Stopped at iHop, little Red School house in Pickens, Mississippi. KFC. So old school. Had BBQ pork rinds at a rest stop in West, Mississippi. Drove through Goodman (my mom’s maiden name).
In Jackson checked into highway motel. Ubered over to meet Jaclyn, an old film friend, and Brian at restaurant. (They since married). Then Irish pub Finnegans and more of their friends joined. Later went to a Blues club till 2:00 am. Super fun with everyone. Always entertaining telling our story and adventures.
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE
Saturday, May 29 Drive to Memphis from Jackson (2 1/2 hours). Stayed at a non-descript Memphis motel.
May 30 – Sunday – Memphis. Egg King for breakfast. An institution. Explored Memphis. Such a treat seeing people out and about during Covid times. Live music everywhere. People touching, hugging, dancing. Alive!
Graceland.
What an over the top treat to visit. My mom was a huge Elvis fan. Listened to his music. I remember my mom crying in the car when she learned he’d died. We visited here when I was a young mom. My son was one year old and took his first steps on that trip.
Went to Sun Studios after Graceland.
Then to see the famous Memphis Peabody ducks. While at the hotel lobby bar watching the ducks, we met Tanya and Phil from Vegas and had fun chats. Burger King later. From upscale to fast food.
May 31 – Memorial Day Monday
Memphis – went to Harbor Town, super mellow all day at Tugs eating and drinking with the locals (who were fanning over the Rogue’s Scottish accent) – quite a rarity in the South!) Walked along the Memphis River.
(Got the tearful call that Daughter broke her hand!!! UGH dejavu of being a bad absent mom. Just like in Scotland at lockdown when she was rushed to the hospital in LA for appendicitis. Both times, Ex there to pick up the pieces. Secure in the family home. The fall out from divorce.)
Mellow quiet night in at the Memphis motel.
(Empty Nest night time thoughts: Always conflicted with not being around my kids, even though they’re grown. I’ll never be enough everywhere. Impossible.)
Tomorrow, on to the goal, Nashville for three weeks.
