Quarantine Chronicles – Part 3 Proud Mama, Virtual Graduations during Lockdown 2020

(From the Lockdown 2020 journals, in a Divorce and a Pandemic)

Quarantini Limontini, Mason Jars from Curbside Cocktails, Virtual Workouts and Labyrinths

APRIL 2020

And… the lucky recipient of Quarantine Kim’s Lockdown Lowdown Virtual Happy Hour is…. Kozue! In London.  (And now Happy Hour is 1:00 pm in order to accommodate London time!) I manifested the quarantini limontini with Remy’s lemons, Robert’s shaker and recipe, Alexander’s glass from a Mother’s Day gift to me, and InstaCart SHE-ro!

Day 24 How do you like your avocado toast, with a kick or a punch?

Thank you BondIt Fitness and Jenny for making me set an alarm and get my arse out of bed. Nobody is here to make me do it. I groan when I hear the alarm, and nearly don’t make it. But then I remember it’s Fun Pants Friday! And there’s boxing!  And I finally broke out my pink boxing gloves! There may or may have not been punching of the walls. No excuses as to space to work out in. I did it in the small kitchen (as I realized the wooden floors in the other room may have been shaking the next door cottage, haha).  My nice mason jar of water on deck (Hydrate! These come from my curbside cocktails :).

And if you all haven’t experimented with the self-timer on your phone camera, you’re missing out on hours of fun. I highly recommend it as a time waster.

As Jenny says, punch and kick away Disappointment, Anger, Frustration, and breathe in the positive, whatever that may be. She also asked for everyone to support small local businesses in any way you can. Cheers!

Been talking to the Rogue. Future is so uncertain now. I’m hopeful he can come to California first (maybe Nashville). Then my dream scenario is I go wherever is open and my projects are going – Ireland, Scotland, Canada or somewhere in the U.S.… it’s all going to be spontaneous as to what happens.

Day 25 – April 18, 2020 My Son

A grad photo just arrived. Along with so many emotions. I’m delighted I can have a sight of my son in my cottage. He is finishing up his last days of now online classes for his Masters in Chemical Engineering at University College Dublin. I am so proud of his hard work over these years, and so very great grateful we were able to attend his Bachelor’s graduation ceremony in Dublin last September.

The two of us had a graduation trip planned in May to Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland. Obviously that’s on hold. I’m hopeful we will one day be able to do that together. Again, I’m so glad I spent the extra days in Dublin with him in February and March since I don’t know when I’ll be able to go again.

Let’s all honor and celebrate each and every graduate at every age in these coming months, and acknowledge the disappointment of not having our normal in person celebrations. I look forward to seeing everyone’s photos and make-shift celebrations, with the hope that eventually there can be postponed ceremonies of some sort. Proud mama here full of love and pride, even from half a world away.

My Daughter

Mother-Daughter pre-graduation celebration to give her the gift I had made last December before we knew the state of the world we’d be in. She is finishing her now on-line classes for her Bachelor’s degree at USC in Film and Television Production. Obviously there are a lot of disappointments from leaving school and her friends, suddenly with her appendectomy, and then finding herself on lockdown with the rest of the world, and then culminating her senior year suddenly back home.  There were so many graduation activities, rituals, ceremonies and trips planned, and her senior year thesis film screening.

Proud Mama

I am so proud of the hard work she has put in these four years, and the immense talent in acting, writing, directing, producing that she shows in all of her work.

Despite the disappointments, I am watching my daughter rise above, focusing on finishing her classes the best way she can, and taking care of herself, body and mind. She is currently writing a script, planning film projects, and even has a self-tape audition tomorrow that we’ll work on together.

We have been a mother-daughter team since her birth, but especially since her freshman year in high school when I would drive her to L.A. for her auditions for years. I watched her grit, fearless spirit, courage and tenacity during those years. Then getting into USC as an acting major, and pursuing her craft and studies. By junior year she continued to push herself, and transferred into the extremely competitive film school at USC. She has since found her passion, her calling, and is pursuing her dreams, lockdown or not.

Director’s Chair

I wanted to present her with her director’s chair to inspire her to never give up and to always follow her dreams. I hope it will help her to push through these challenging times and be a symbol of her bright future.

(Shout out to Women in Media where I met the great people of filmcraftla who last December inspired me to order these mother and daughter chairs. I ordered one for myself as well as my own symbol to never give up.)

Day 25 So apparently a 3.3 earthquake nearby. If the lockdown COVID doesn’t get you, the earth will apparently. Next up, Self tape Quarantine Lockdown Style! The dreaded part where I have to film and be the reader. The pressure is on.

Day 26 Daughter here. Slept til 11:30! 2:00 pm brunch.
Chatted with Son about new business.
The Rogue FaceTime. Plans.
Gray Sunday. Getting in the Lockdown groove.

Lockdown Labyrinth

Lockdown Labyrinth
The Quiet of Quarantine.
The Silence of Solitude.
Wandering.
Exploring.
Discovering.
Reflecting.

In all my life I never knew this existed on State Street. The sign invites you to take a prayerful, meditative walk in the sacred space…to find peace and healing.

“Some people find it helpful to walk with a specific intention: a prayer, a question to be answered, a pain to be healed, a need to feel closer to God, or just open awareness for whatever comes.”

If that isn’t appropriate during lockdown, I don’t know what is.
Daughter and I followed the path to the center and back.
Very peaceful on this Sunday evening.
(There is one out by UCSB as well. I’ll go find it this week.)

Day 27 – Fighting the Monday Blues, Music Edition.

In today’s Lockdown Challenge: Come up with your own version. Must adhere to Julie Andrew’s sing song rhythm. Photo a plus.

These are a few of my favorite things
When the mask bites!
When the sanitizer stings!
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad…!
(Dance and Twirl about the room!)

Bars and restaurants not open until Christmas in UK!? Say what??

Day 28 Never did I ever…

…Think I would work out (nearly) every day at 8:00 am to Instagram live. (BondFitness SB).
It clears the dark thoughts of the night, and allows me to find the color in the day.
No excuses! Today’s weight/prop – a bottle of cranberry juice.
This week is the plank challenge. Yesterday 30 seconds, today 1 minute (no problem)… and so on.
Who’s in?

Global Lockdown News

What a joy to be able to work with the talented writer Suse in the U.K., from around the world. It is so helpful to have self-imposed deadlines and be accountable to someone when you’re working alone in lockdown. I was able to disappear in our Ireland fantasy land for a few weeks. Finally sending her my work on our draft. Tag you’re it!

In other Global Lockdown News, I’m able to connect with my world in Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, England, the East Coast, and the Bay Area over my other Irish project, all from the comfort of my Quarantine Cottage. I’m getting way more done as I’m grounded, but I cannot wait to be back on the move.
